So it is not strange to have sprockets of native forests accompanied by fermented pickles and sauerkraut on the same plate. As the culture of this area, their food is a rich mixture of indigenous and foreign flavors. Today Valdivia is a city marked by its interesting dining scene, with many restaurants, pubs and bars which offer tourists a particularly cosmopolitan flavor. Its traditions are deeply rooted, merging customs of the native people, migrations from central and southern regions, and international immigration, especially German, from the second half of the nineteenth century. ![]() The history of the city is full of strong moments, like combats or corsair attacks, but its multicultural character shaped a unique culture. A few years after its foundation in 1575, there was a great earthquake after in 1909 a big fire destroyed the city and in 1960 there was a real catastrophe: an earthquake of 9.6 on Richter scale, considered the strongest in history. That is why it was called “the key to the South Sea” by its formidable ocean access.įrom the beginning of its existence the city has suffered several natural disasters. Valdivia is located at the junction of three major rivers flowing into the sea. The Spanish recognized its perfect strategic position to build a town with a system of fortifications. Under the name of Santa Maria la Blanca de Valdivia, the city was founded in 1552 by the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia himself.
